Zero-Waste Life

I found this article a while ago, but it is still inspiring to me. It is about a 23-year-old woman in NYC named Lauren. For close to three years she has not made any trash. Of course she composts, and I expect there are somethings she can't get away from, but for the most part she is compeletely waste free. I tried to live like this for a month in January.. It didn't last long. Even on the way into school I was offered a free sample of food. Which I innocently took, when I realized that the sample was wrapped in aluminum foil. It is a lot harder that I had anticipated. And toilet paper.. Let's just say I did have some success at home, but when I was out it was basically impossible. I wonder what her secret is for that.. Although my attempt was not completely successful I did take a lot away from it. For example I now refill what ever house hold products I can: washing up soap, shampoo, conditioner, etc. I try not to eat at fast food places. (Also, sidenote, most places don't like it when you offer them your own plate to put food. Probably some health code or something.) I would like to try again soon. I am thinking about buying a house by the end of the summer. One of the first things I will be doing is adding a large compost bin. It is a bit difficult to convince people in your life to be waste free, and when you see things being thrown away it is hard to be strong, but I will try my best.
